Bio
Belgian photographer Luc Dratwa was born in 1958 and is an autodidact. His art features in international art fairs and exhibitions. Exclusively for LUMAS, Dratwa has created two new works for his famous series Windows. The artist is based in Brussels.
Interview
Picasso once said, “You don't make art, you find it.” Where do you find your art?
I don’t know yet if I’ll find it—or better yet, if it’s not the one that finds me and comes to me.
From idea to realization: How do you approach your work?
I start with an emotion or a mental image. Then I look for the most fitting form, without overanalyzing it or trying to explain it too much.
What is your favorite book?
I don’t have just one favorite book. I love all books—especially the ones I write!
Which artist would you like to have coffee with, and what would you talk about?
With Caravaggio. I’d talk to him about light, shadow, violence, and truth.
How did you come to art?
Through painting, when I was younger. And by discovering photography through the lens of my own gaze. I’ve always felt the need to transform what I see into an image.
Which people in your surroundings influence you?
Everything and everyone. Places, situations, faces, the people I love, and even complete strangers.
Imagine you had a time machine. Where would you travel to?
I'm very curious about the future. So, I'd ask—not to go back in time, but to go forward, a thousand years from now!
What is your greatest passion outside of art?
Writing. It extends my photographic work in a different way—with words instead of light.
What are you currently working on?
An absolute secret!
