The painter Tobias Stutz draws inspiration from Bauhaus architecture and interior design. His works are marked by clear forms, reduced compositions, and a pastel palette. Especially notable is his innovative Cutout series: by cutting out shapes, he creates a performative play with perspective and form. These pieces direct the viewer’s focus to the essential and invite deep immersion into a calm, structured visual world—void of figures but rich in art historical references.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The studied painter draws his inspiration particularly from architecture and interior design, especially from the Bauhaus era. Critics praise the work of the greatly exhibited artist above all for its expressive reduction and harmonious composition. Although he creates new dream destinations through his paintings, trained eyes can discover numerous references to architectural icons such as Frank Lloyd Wright or artistic legends like Edward Hopper. His work combines impressive art historical and modern references with remarkable creativity. Some of his most recent works are cut-outs, an innovative art form that expands his contemporary repertoire. In a performative way, they emphasize the excerpt-like quality that his work thrives on: the precise focus enables an examination of the artwork that goes into depth rather than breadth. The presence of figures is deliberately avoided in order to draw the viewer's attention to the minimalist expression and clarity of the structures. The purist concept creates a space for clear vision, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves undisturbed in the harmony of the composition and feel part of the serene atmosphere. The use of straight forms and a pastel palette often creates a soft ambiance reminiscent of the atmosphere of California - the glamorous home of innovation and big dreams.

I AMSTERDAM YOU BERLIN, Galerie seifert l lardon, Berlin
INTERVIEW
Picasso once said: “You don’t make art, you find it.” Where do you find your art?
New ideas often come to me while I’m riding my bike to the studio. Sometimes they also appear in the moment I wake up or over my first coffee in bed.
From the initial idea to its realization: How do you approach your work?
Sketches and preliminary drawings point me in the right direction. I also use photographs as references, although I like to collage and alter them.
Your favorite book?
Florain Illies: “1913, The Summer of the Century”
Which artist would you like to have coffee with, and what would you talk about?
Piet Mondrian. I would ask him, as a time traveler, what he has to say about beauty and aesthetics in general, and whether he is aware of the enormous influence he has had on design and architecture right up to the present day. I would also ask him what he thinks of my art—and hope I would have the courage to actually ask him.
How did you come to art?
There weren’t many alternatives. As a child, I actually wanted to become an architect, but I had to realize that I’m better with colors than with numbers. Now I hope that one day the houses I paint will be built by others.
Which people around you influence you?
Artists from my immediate surroundings, as well as art from past eras. But they can also be philosophers, thoughts, quotations, or impulses.
Imagine you have a time machine. Where would you travel?
To Paris or Berlin in the golden 1920s. I would also have liked the 1950s or 1960s—although in that case, California.
Your greatest passion apart from art?
Music—my cello, an instrument from 1788. It provides a balance for me and gives me strength for my art.
What are you currently working on?
Once again, on somewhat abstracted shaped canvases with a 3D effect and transparent colored glass surfaces.
