Hans Schüle

Background Information about Hans Schüle

Introduction

Hans Schüle works with steel as if it were not a fixed material, but an open system. His sculptures do not emerge in opposition to the material, but from within it: through repetition, assembly, condensation, and through a precise balancing of tension and structure. What emerges are not bodies in the classical sense, but spatial configurations that unfold in the act of viewing.

Schüle is a sculptor of steel – and this is precisely where the distinctiveness of his work lies. Instead of emphasizing the hardness of the material, he demonstrates how permeable, flexible, and organic steel can become. His sculptures sometimes appear open and delicate, almost transparent, at other times compact and self-contained; some seem calm, others highly dynamic. Yet they always develop their form from an internal logic inherent to the material.

A central principle of his work is the construction with simple, recurring modules. These are not merely added together, but interwoven into complex structures that open outward into space. This is where Schüle’s true strength lies: his sculptures do not simply occupy space, they make it perceptible. They organize movement, lines of sight, and density in such a way that space no longer remains a background, but appears as an active counterpart.

Although his works are consistently abstract, they evoke a sense of corporeality. Organic curves stand alongside angular, fractured forms; density and openness, form and gesture, materiality and movement enter into a dynamic tension. Thus, despite their constructive clarity, his works never appear mechanical. Instead, they possess a peculiar vitality – as if they do not merely exist in space, but act within it.

Schüle has developed this approach over decades. After training as a graphic designer, he studied painting and sculpture in Munich and Berlin and became a master student of Jürgen Reipka in 1996. What proved decisive was not only the refinement of his technical skills, but the consistency with which he continued to explore steel as a field of its own.

Today, his work ranges from small-scale sculptures to monumental pieces for public space. Exhibitions in Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and China, as well as public projects from Milan to Houston, attest to the international presence of a practice that has continuously evolved from within the material itself.

Schüle’s sculptures convince not through effect, but through necessity. Nothing appears imposed for the sake of impression; everything seems discovered within the process of form-making itself. Perhaps this is precisely their strength: that they do not understand steel as a limitation, but as a possibility – for openness, movement, and a form of space that fully emerges only in the act of perception.

Bio

Hans Schüle is a German sculptor and painter whose work moves between geometric precision and organic form. He was born in 1965 in Neckarsulm and completed training as well as professional work as a graphic designer from 1987 to 1991, which early on shaped his artistic perspective.

From 1991 to 1997, he studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the University of the Arts in Berlin. In 1996, he became a master student of Professor Jürgen Reipka.

His works have been presented internationally in numerous exhibitions and at renowned art fairs, including Art Cologne, Art Karlsruhe, Art Frankfurt, SCOPE New York, Art Forum Berlin, and the Stockholm Art Fair.

Hans Schüle has been a member of the German Artists’ Association since 2004 and of the Baden-Württemberg Artists’ Association since 2016.
