Background Information about Berthold Steinhilber
Introduction
At dawn and dusk, enchanting forests, deep ravines, and imposing rockscapes are bathed in an atmospheric glow. The sun continually reshapes the outstretched valleys, meadows, and fields below. Photographer Berthold Steinhilber devotes himself to these breathtaking scenes and inspirational locations, revealing previously unknown sides of Germany and the Netherlands in his series, “Landscapes”.
Steinhilber’s compositions bring lofty heights and endless expanses together. While we are seduced by the rich greens of the slopes around the Seealpsee lake, the water of the Lech gorge glimmers an alluring azure blue.. It is not difficult to identify colour as Steinhilber’s enduring passion. He seeks to capture scenes just as nature intended, using his ALPA camera to present images that are both authentic and imaginative. To ensure these impressive results, he travels to his locations a number of times – at different times of the day and under different weather conditions – until he finds the perfect lighting and, of course, the ideal vantage point. Exciting perspectives make each photograph full of surprises, and the viewer feels almost weightless.
The photographer displays a virtuosic talent for composition. Intricate viaducts forge tracks through the spectacular rocky massifs of Saxon Switzerland. The morning mist glistens on the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, slowly revealing a breathtaking panorama.
Steinhilber combines traditional subjects with a modern, evocative style. The poetic images from “Landscapes” demonstrate a deeply romantic understanding of nature and forests, and they are characterised by an absorbing atmosphere.
After studying photography in Dortmund and Falmouth, Steinhilber established his atelier in Stuttgart in 2002. Countless exhibitions and awards followed shortly thereafter. International recognition came in the wake of his series “Ghost Towns of the American West”.
