A colourful throng of beachgoers, parrots, gliders, an overcrowded salon, guests swinging from the chandelier – Sanda Anderlon’s work is an invitation to a wild party, sensory overload in the best possible way: surreal but highly entertaining. Upon closer inspection, we discover the bizarre details hidden within, carefully placed curiosities that capture our attention. Showgirls from the 1920s party with hippies, a drinks delivery man in sweatpants interrupts a daydreaming Victorian woman, and a snowman stands next to a bikini model.
The young Croatian artist composes her wonderfully exuberant panoramas from photographic and illustrated elements. The large-format works have a grandiose appearance and an aesthetic that is reminiscent of early Pop Art. We can’t help but think of Richard Hamilton’s era-defining piece “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?”
Anderlon creates her compositions during weeks of precise work, putting together thousands of individual elements to create new, dramatic relationships between them. Like a DJ, she samples from different eras and styles, using them to create pieces that reflect the flood of digital images we are surrounded by today – Pop Art in the contemporary zeitgeist.
Sanda Anderlon’s pictures reveal how colourful the infinite facets of life can be, eclectically, anachronistically, and humorously celebrating the joy of collecting. Even amongst the bustling masses, individual characters stand out – the flood of visual stimuli sharpens the viewer’s observational powers and invites us to let these remarkable scenes play out in our imaginations.
