Claire Denarié-Soffietti sees the world as an interwoven structure—not as a mimicry of nature, but as its own network where everything is connected. “I truly see the world as a tapestry which is never intended to copy nature as I wouldn’t plagiarise it,” she says. Her canvases translate this invisible network into color, form, and meaning—bringing together people, landscapes, and memories. Red and yellow lines thread through her paintings like visible bonds of a universal connectedness.
Born in Versailles and shaped by time spent in South Africa and Barbados, the self-taught artist now lives in Dubai—where her diverse influences converge. Her works depict quiet scenes and figures, but never as mere representations. With vivid colors, intimate inner worlds, and subtle distortions, her paintings open into a reality more alive than life itself—becoming immersive, sensory experiences that are playful, radiant, and deeply felt. For Denarié-Soffietti, painting is a response to darkness: a luminous force.
Her inspirations range from van Gogh to Gauguin and Lautrec, but her style is unmistakably her own. On large-scale canvases, she builds a visual language that is both ornamental and narrative—a fabric of bold color, rhythmic linework, and enigmatic characters.
In series like Hypnose or Burst into Bloom, we encounter female figures that float like dream-beings between nature and ornamentation. These works situate her within a contemporary painting movement shaped by surreal imagery—yet they remain sharply of the moment. In Parasol or Domo, the landscape stretches into a kaleidoscopic mosaic—familiar, yet otherworldly. The underlying thread: a vision of "shared humanity" that glimmers through her painted tapestries—universal, yet deeply personal.
For over three decades, Denarié-Soffietti has been both student and teacher of Tai Chi—a practice that has informed her sensitivity to energy, balance, and movement. Her paintings breathe rhythm, tension, and composure. Unsurprisingly, collectors from Europe to Asia and the Gulf choose her paintings as centerpieces for refined interiors: they anchor a space, not just adorning it but infusing it.
Claire Denarié-Soffietti’s work transcends boundaries—geographic and stylistic. She makes visible how the individual is woven into the whole. In her world, even the fractures are threads of connection.

INTERVIEW
1. How did you get into art?
My name is Claire Denarié, a French painter now based in Dubai. After several decades in South Africa and Barbados, my practice draws inspiration from the expressive color palettes of van Gogh, Gauguin and Lautrec – interpreted through a contemporary lens and executed on large canvases for emotionally resonant interiors. My collectors from Europe to Asia and the Gulf often acquire my work to anchor high-end residences, private villas and curated design spaces.
2. Picasso once said, “you don’t make art, you find it.” Where do you find your art?
I truly see the world as a tapestry which is never intended to copy Nature as I wouldn't plagiarise it. When the world morphs into solid, a bond joining us is created in space. The matrix of our contemporary world is created, where each atom is linked to one another by a thread, creating a global consciousness. Fundamental and often geometric laws and patterns (irrespective of standard physical compositions) begin to pop up in my reading of the world. I see people, landscapes, or just about anything (grass, water, faces, skies) mesh together in an unexplainable unity. Zoom further on each piece, and you will see lines (often red or yellow) disturb the canvas. Those are my common threads that unite us all. They are the scars (or the glitch in the matrix), which weave the tapestry of nature.
3. From an idea to its materialization: How do you approach your work?
Fundamental and often geometric laws and patterns begin to pop up in my reading of the world. I’ll paint the tapestry of our shared humanity, together with its landscapes. At times naive but always joyful, I’ll be part of the force that counteracts darkness in art. The plan is not to ever take myself seriously, always searching for light through the cracks.
4. What is your favorite book?
My favourite book would be the Dao de Jing, or Zadig from Voltaire.
5. Imagine you have a time machine. Where would you go?
I would probably travel back to Leonardo da Vinci's time and follow him like a lap dog.
6. Other than art, what are you most passionate about?
You might have guessed with the above perspective, that I was big on Energy (Chi). Since you ask, I'm a student and teacher of Tai Qi sword, and Tai chi, which I have been studying for 30 years.
7. What are you working on right now?
My last painting is a large tapestry, of a fantastic world, slightly Japanese, including three animals (tiger-like), surrounding a woman with an incredibly intrinsic coat, in a moving world. This was a deep, deep labour of love, and I hope that it will show.
