Introduction
Dutch photographer Rohn Meijer documented the supermodel era. During the 1990s, he was backstage at major fashion shows in Milan, capturing unforgettable images of the stars of the catwalk. His widely acclaimed series Dreamgirls includes the image “Linda Evangelista ‘91”, a powerful, memorable profile shot of the titular model.
It is the exquisite combination of light, colour, and focus that makes Meijer’s Dreamgirls so unique. These pieces embody the artist’s distinctive approach and stand out instantly from the mass of fashion and celebrity shots.
The brightly lit face in sharp focus juxtaposed by the gloomy, blurry background creates a powerfully dramatic effect. Meijer’s atmospheric images feel like a rare moment of calm amidst the storm of a fashion show. The photographer is able to reveal the unique, reflective, and even vulnerable character of his models.
