Famous artists and old masters

Well known to art lovers are the opulent still lifes of the Dutch masters, the Vanitas-Taferele and the dramatic Chiaroscuro of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. The magic of transience, the play with light and shadow - these are captured by our artists as skilfully as by the painters of the 16th to 18th centuries. And what's most astonishing: these are photographic works. Kevin Best, Mark Seelen, Kristina Varaksina, and Lynne Collins arrange stylish and dramatic compositions which are in no way inferior to those of Jan Vermeer and Caravaggio.

Who doesn't immediately think of the illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian when it comes to filigree flower and nature artworks? Do you immediately see the proximity to the baroque opulence of a Peter Paul Rubens in the exuberant dynamic collages of Ysabel Lemay? Juan Fortes , Annet van der Voort, and Kris Scholz show us the beauty and transience of the natural world through their own lenses, and transport the classical subject into the 21st century.

Lovers of portraiture are well at home in our collection. Gazi Sanzoy presents a modern take on the Renaissance portraiture of nobility, and Christian Lacroix's works are an exciting reinvention of the masters of the 15th century to 17th centuries, such as Sandro Botticelli, Symphonisba Anguissola, Leonardo da Vinci or even Michelangelo .

Famous romantic artists

Probably the most widely known painters of the romantic period are Caspar David Friedrich and William Turner. These masters of emotive painting make inner emotions visible with the help of their works of landscape art. Even today, landscape photography still evidences the inspiration of these artists, who elicited in their works that in the natural world which lies below the surface. Wolfgang Uhlig makes us dream of the sea. The meditative long-term exposures of the sea surface and the precise portraits of cresting waves create at least as much of an atmosphere of spiritual longing as the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich. Associations with William Turner's expressive light and landscape painting can be found in the works of Marja Pirilae and Douglas Busch. Experience the abstractions of Gottfried Salzmann, and the large-format landscape photographs of Horst and Daniel Zielske. The latter even dedicated a whole series of works to William Turner: Modern Turner.

Famous modern artists

The designation "Classic Modernism" includes the works of many famous artists, and those whose work is in the tradition of European and American modernism going back to the early decades of the 20th century. The most diverse styles emerged in this period, from the fin de siècle until the Second World War, and represent the canon of world- works, such as Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) by Pablo Picasso. But Classical Modernism comprises so much more than just Picasso or Monet. Whether you are a fan of Impressionism, Expressionism, Art Nouveau and Surrealism or Bauhaus art, you will find the right artwork for you in the LUMAS portfolio!

The most well-known artist of Impressionism, Claude Monet, created unforgettable works with his haystacks in different lighting conditions, and at different times of day. His haystacks are perfectly exemplary of the power of light to control and shape the mood of a given artwork. Peter von Felbert follows in the tradition of Monet and other nature impressionists like Mary Cassatt, carefully approaching the theme of the hayloft through the photographer's lens.

Do you also think directly of the ballet dancers of Edgar Degas or Toulouse Lautrec when you see the photographic works of Hajime Yoshida? We do too, and Yoshida's pieces transport us right back to the Paris at the fin de siècle!

The spiritual father of Expressionism, the painter Vincent van Gogh, painted many landscapes that expressed his turbulent emotional life. Van Gogh paintings till today are widely known and reproduced on a large scale, and in many cases are taken as identical to art itself. The aerial landscapes by Klaus D.Francke vibrate in the colorful palette of van Gogh, but take as their object the natural texture of the earth - seen from an unnatural height.

The motif of the birchwood forest, classically treated by Paula Modersohn-Becker and Gustav Klimt, are present in our portfolio in a new way. Discover forest photography by André Wagner and Steven Friedman in large formats, or as panorama artworks for your home. You can also feel the spirit of Gustav Klimt in the digital mosaic-like collages of Derek Gores and the breathtaking portraits of Evguenia Silvinia.

Paul Gauguin and Olaf Hajek are bound together through their expansive use of color and their attraction to expressive portraiture. Hajek's models make up a diverse array of confident, self-asserting subjects, whose personalities have the power to shape and define the room in which they are exhibited. The grand master of surrealism, Salvador Dalí, is also represented in our portfolio. Loui Jover stages well-known artists like Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, and Frida Kahlo as exciting collages, adding a touch of playfulness reminiscent of Joan Miró. The photo journalist Robert Lebeck knows how to capture Dalí in an intimate photograph.

Efren Isaza has taken the powerful portraits and nudes of Amedeo Modigliani as a model. In her works, Isaza goes further than Modigliani. Isaza's colorful and abstract portraits of alluring figures are a high water mark of photography as a high art.

The great artists of the Bauhaus and the styles associated with them have been pioneers for art, design and architecture in the 20th and 21st centuries. The clear language of forms with its abstractions and the selected color palette, which often comprises only primary colors, clearly signal when it comes to Bauhaus paintings. You can see this influence for example in Piet Paris, Sarah Morris and Jenny Okun see - a wink to Wassily Kandinsky, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Lyonel Feininger and Paul Klee.

Edward Hopper is undoubtedly one of the most popular modern artists. The mood of his paintings, which so well reflect the human condition, still has a great influence on many photographers and painters. The distinguished silence of his canvases and the illustrious figures who populate Hopper's paintings know Christophe Jacrot, Andreas Kock, David Eger, Sebastian Magnani and Gustav Deutsch and use them for their photographic work.

Famous female artists

Alongside well-known male artists, many female artists were and are peerless stars in the art world. Frida Kahlo, Niki de Saint Phalle, Louise Bourgeois, Georgia o'Keeffe, and Marina Abramovíc are a few icons of the 20th century and contemporary art. Their names are synonumous not only with women artists in general, but with whole movements in art on the level of content and technique, and the popularization of art beyond the canvas.

The Swedish artist Hilma af Klint was a pioneer of abstract painting, and one of the twentieth century's most complex female painters. Already in 1906 she developed small-format abstract paintings - a good 10 years before the Black Square by Kasimir Malevich! You can discover Klint's colors and formal vocabulary, for example, in the abstract murals of German painter Daniel Maria Thurau.

Our artists reinterpret the self-portraits of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo artworks bear witness to the tragic life of the artist and manifest her as a legend in the history of feminist painting! The colorful larger-than-life Nanas, and colorful sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle are some of the inspirational bases for the sensual works of Sabine Dehnel.

When you think of the stylish black-and-white art by Sylvie Blum don't you inevitably think of the hidden eroticism of the flowers of Georgia o'Keeffe? Anna Halm Schudel and Andrey Yakovlev & Lili Aleeva know in a unique way to evoke the spirit of Tamara de Lempicka, the great portrait painter of Art Deco.

Famous contemporary artists

Since the middle of the 20th century at the latest and the emergence of the Pop Art, new rules have been in force for art. Contemporary artists devote themselves to a variety of techniques, themes or newer media like video art. Whether hand-signed editions by renowned creators or themes and styles that pay tribute to the greatest living or contemporary icons, our portfolio contains a multitude of rare and exclusive treasures!

German painting superstars such as Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, and Anselm Kiefer exhibit in renowned museums around the world. If these talents appeal to you, then take a look at the work of Josh von Staudach, Edward B. Gordon, Sabine Wild, Pep Ventosa, or Serge Hamad. Both their mastery and proximity to these luminaries can hardly be overlooked.

What would Christo be without Jeanne-Claude? The symbiosis of the couple results in this iconic artist duo, who kept the world in suspense with their spectacular wrapping works. Exclusively at LUMAS you will find hand-signed, limited editions by the artist, who died in 2020. Tip: With our Masters, you can experience editions by important contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, and Ai Weiwei in museum quality.

Beatrice Hug and Freddy Reitz draw their inspiration from the middle of the 20th century. The American painter Mark Rothko and his contemplative color field painting paved the way for the appreciation of large and expressive color compositions, present in equal measure in the work of Beatrice Hug. Hug's medium, however, is photography, which she processes through skilful abstraction into stimulating, painterly compositions. Freddy Reitz on the other hand is clearly a modern Pop Art artist. His works are characterized by bright colors, everyday objects, and the play with symbols of East and West, which evokes associations with scions of American art like Andy Warhol and the colors and motifs of Jasper Johns.

Andreas Gursky is one of the most important contemporary photographers. His large format artworks of landscapes, cities, and interiors are impressive, but staged with restraint. The combination with nearly unsightable digital post-processing puts Gursky's work over the top. This kind of realistic photography with a twist, whether as panoramic images or small formats, can be found among others in the works at Christopher Woodcock, Lutz Hilgers, Larry Yust, Sven Fennema, or Rafael Neff.
