Art and architecture have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship for thousands of years. Reinhard Görner impressively shows how opulent spaces and meaningful paintings and sculptures can add up to more than the sum of their parts. He invariably finds the perfect perspective for illustrating their fascinating appeal.

The museums populating Berlin’s Museum Island make ideal subjects for Reinhard Görner’s clear visual language. The photographer makes it plain that the art world had a skillful ally in architect Friedrich August Stüler, who designed two of the museums there. Görner captures the atmospheric lighting, the ambiance of the space, the beauty of the paintings, and the power of the sculptures in such a way that a new and exciting work of art emerges. Equally successful with modern buildings such as the Haus des Rundfunks, Görner’s point of view broadens the viewer’s perspective.

Château de Versailles and Palazzi

Ever dreamt of strolling through Versailles like Louis XIV, the Sun King himself? Reinhard Görner makes this majestic wish come true with his series, Château de Versailles. The photographer gives the viewer an exclusive and private glimpse into the castle’s impressive halls. However, to create this effect, Görner does not require Baroque extravagance; he also gives us exquisite insights into the smaller, yet no less impressive, Palazzi.

With his camera, Reinhard Görner breathes new life into the rooms. History becomes perceptible in his photographs. The Hall of Mirrors tells of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles after World War I. In the Salon de Paix, one can practically hear the concerts of Queen Marie Lszczynska. Despite, or perhaps due to, his special approach to architectural photography, Görner can capture a wealth of extravagant details without losing himself in them.

Parc de Versailles

Most parks seem made for jogging. The Parc de Versailles, on the other hand, invites you to linger, although that is not so easy to see now, with the constant stream of thousands of tourists strolling the paths. Reinhard Görner presents André Le Nôtre‘s wonderfully artistic achievement in landscaping as it once pleased their Royal Majesties: as the perfect composition of symmetry and infinity.

Görner also retains the same sense of lightness in the pictures of the monumental constructions such as the Grand Perron. The secret of the photographs’ expressive power lies in their perspectives and depiction of nature’s perfection.

Cutouts

Sometimes a cut-out shows more than the whole. In his Cutouts, Reinhard Görner directs our attention to details that, when emphasised in this way, take on tremendous significance. The gesture of a queen sparks the imagination. A youth’s learned expression takes on fearful characteristics.

Reinhard Görner respects painters and their work, which is even still plain to see when he presents their work in part. The paintings are depicted in great detail to let the gaze wander. Much like the old masters, Görner limits what we can see to guide us to sections where we discover something new.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1950, Reinhard Görner has lived in Berlin since 1970. The German capital offers infinite opportunities for architectural photography, and new ones are constantly being created. An inspiring city for Reinhard Görner. The freelance photographer has been impressing the art world with his architectural pictures since 1982.

TECHNIQUE

As a photographer, Reinhard Görner abstains from tools that could distort reality, meeting his own high aesthetic standards without using a wide-angle lens. His art lies in finding the perfect perspective. He mainly uses available light. In this way, he genuinely honours the work of architecture while creating exciting visual compositions.

In my photographs, I show how architecture influences the way we experience life.
