Background Information about Paul Chan

Untitled (on the 7th)

Paul Chan packs philosophical reflections on politics, religion, gender roles, and living in today's world all into his complex works, overstepping the boundaries of established categories. Drawings, videos, and installations necessitate one another and yet remain single entities. Their raw use of color, combined with hard edges and cut-outs, impresses itself upon the viewer and makes Chan's critical stance clear. One postulate of his art is "hallucinating" the connection between the sacred and the profane, the high and low life in modern society.

New York's Whitney Museum of American Art showed his mixed-media Combines – a major public success – before it was shown at the Serpentine Gallery in London.
