IntroductionAbout the Non-Violence Art Project
Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd created the bronze sculpture "Non-Violence" in 1985 as an homage to John Lennon, who was shot in New York in December of 1980. This sculpture, a gun disarmed, now stands in 16 places around the world as a symbol of peace and non-violence.
The non-profit organization Non-Violence Project Foundation has made its goal to promote world peace through educational initiatives. As part of the Non-Violence Art Project, world-famous personalities such as Yoko Ono and Muhammad Ali create their own versions of the knotted-barrel revolver. A portion of the proceeds from these sculptures benefits the initiative.
About Muhammad Ali
It was not just his extraordinary boxing abilities that made Muhammad Ali a historical figure, but also his constant fighting for equal rights and peace. He was a civil rights activist in the 1960s and refused to join the war efforts in Vietnam despite being threatened with incarceration. In 2005, Muhammad Ali received the gold Otto Hahn Peace Medal from the United Nations Association of Germany for “outstanding services to peace and international understanding.”
Ali’s pistol sculpture "Punch for Peace" is decorated with one of his most memorable quotes: “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”BioAmerican boxer Muhammad Ali was born in 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. By the 1960s, he was quite possibly the most famous boxer in history. The International Olympic Committee named Ali the Athlete of the Century in 1999, and he received a symbolic Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush. His life story has been told in countless movies and books.
