“Images with windows have the same effect as large mirrors: They open up the room and make it visually larger,” explains Susanne Kaiser. The piece by LUMAS artist Luc Dratwa is among her favorites. “The photograph’s realistic perspective is truly impressive. It feels like you’re looking straight out a window at the Empire State Building. I love New York!”

What do you need to look out for when hanging pictures in a small room? The expert advises: “For picture arrangements, I always make sure the pieces have a chromatic or thematic link.” This could be a group of pictures in different shades of blue or many photos of cities. Ideally, the works should be hung salon style, with little space between them in order to maximize your use of the wall space!

Position the large-format work with its center at eye-level. This makes it an absolute attention-grabber, even in smaller rooms. Make sure the furnishings are in tune with the large-format piece and leave it plenty of free space on the wall. This creates visual balance and enables the art to deliver its full impact.

Susanne Kaiser advises against giant, ornate frames. “It is better for pictures to have different frames of equal width and in various colors,” the interior design expert says. That can also include eye-popping colors like neon yellow, bright pink, or grass green.

Create More Depth with the Right Coat of Paint

For smaller rooms, Susanne Kaiser recommends a darker color scheme. “For a guest bathroom, I like to use powerful bottle green, blue-green, or dark blue. This emphasizes the room’s cave-like character and makes the small room more harmonious.” In medium-sized rooms, she prefers softer grays. A lighter color makes the room appear larger. A white stripe below the ceiling can also make the room appear larger. Kaiser’s secret tip: “I sometimes coordinate the color of the furniture pieces to create more excitement and depth.”
