IMITATION OR NATURE?
"My photography is architectural, expressive, objective, orderly, and yet highly emotional" – this is how the Belgian photographer René Clohse (*1958) describes his credo. In fact, his "Namibia" series, desert photographs shot in 2000 at the end of the rainy season, fascinates through its simplicity. The word photography literally means "light picture," and his theatrical work, shot with a medium-format camera on negative film, is indeed expressive and full of light. Looking at these pictures another characteristic seizes you immediately: the theatrical. Some of Clohse’s motifs have the effect of stage sets in which one could, with a little bit of imagination, partake in a contemporary ballet, a play by Chekhov, a modern opera, or a movie. Seldom does one see photographs that are made without manipulation but still seem to be staged so theatrically.
