ABOUT THE WORK

Firenze and Venezia

In Ralph Hinterkeuser’s large-format work, Florence and Venice are presented in such picturesque detail as to seem nearly unreal. While the streets are empty in the early morning hours, the mysterious cities reveal their true faces to the photographer. It is gripping and emotional.

Ralph Hinterkeuser’s work is characterised by warm colouring and classical composition. The cities appear almost like stage sets. Stillness creates tension, and the atmosphere is thick. Hinterkeuser packs as much information as possible into each image.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ralph Hinterkeuser first learned the subtleties of the trade as an assistant to Walter Schels. In Bielefeld, Germany, he began to study photo and film design in 1983 under Gottfried Jäger and Jörg Boström. His large-format pictures of urban and rural spaces are impressive for their high density and narrative power. Born in Bonn in 1959, Hinterkeuser now lives and works in Berlin.

TECHNIQUE

To give Venice’s canals, bridges and gondolas a new coat of paint, Hinterkeuser captures the city, often called “The Queen of the Adriatic”, in nuanced, breathtaking light. This gives his compositions extraordinarily rich colour. Hinterkeuser does not just depict Venice; instead, he provides an individual, deeply personal introduction to the lagoon city. The palazzi appear peaceful and yet powerful, the waterways shimmering beneath them.

Ralph Hinterkeuser’s fascinating series Venezia offers a new look at what is probably the most-photographed island in the world. Perhaps New Objectivity photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch explained this phenomena best when he said, “Even very familiar things offer entirely new perspectives when viewed in parts.”

In order to create a resonance, one must let himself be set in motion.
